The headquarters of the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (IGG) are located in the CNR Research Area in Pisa. About 50 staff are employed in the IGG headquarters, accompanied by several personnel units with temporary fellowships (post-docs and doctorate students). Close collaborations exist with the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa.

The personnel of the IGG headquarters works on geodynamics, geology, geothermal resources, geochronology and geomorphology, on environmental topics including groundwater resources and the impact of anthropic activities on the environment, on biogeochemical cycles and on geosphere-biosphere interactions in the Earth Critical Zone, on the geological aspects of the carbon cycle, on planetary geology, on paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, on the impacts of global change and on geological and environmental hazard.

Research activities at the IGG headquarters are characterized by analytical work in a large number of diverse chemistry, geochemistry and isotopic laboratories, by field activities, numerical simulations, database creation and management, analysis and interpretation of geological and environmental data.
