The Florence Territorial Unit of the IGG is hosted by the Department of Earth Sciences (DST) of the University of Florence. The personnel consist in sixteen researchers, a laboratory technician and an accounting clerk.

At the Florence Unit, researches in the fields of (i) Geosciences: Geodynamics and Volcanism, Stratigraphy and Biostratigraphy, Geochemistry and Isotope Geochemistry, Petrology, Geothermics, Geochronology, Ore Deposit studies; and (ii) Conservation of Cultural Heritage, are carried out in collaboration with both the University staff associated to CNR, and other research institutions.

Eight laboratories are active, some of which are shared with DST: Tectonic Modelling, Experimental Mineralogy and Petrology, Radiolarians, Analysis of Fluid Inclusions, Fission Tracks, Electron Microprobe, Material Processing for Cultural Heritage and Rock Analysis, Radiogenic Isotope Geochemistry. Fieldwork, analogue and numerical modelling of complex systems, and 3D geologic modelling are also carried out.

The interaction between the IGG and the host DST is also expressed through teaching assignments and tutoring of Bachelor, Master and PhD Theses.
