The IGG Secondary Unit in Turin is housed within the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Turin.
The group conducts thematic geological mapping activities aimed at reconstructing geological models by integrating field studies with the application of modern survey and data processing technologies. The development of geological models is essential for the development of basic research, the planning and assessment of geological hazards, the environmental impact assessment of major infrastructure projects, and the management of georesources.
The group also analyzes climate change proxies preserved in the stratigraphic and geomorphological records that characterize the Quaternary successions as a key to understanding the impact of ongoing climate change. They also analyze the complex relationships between the Geosphere and the Biosphere in the Earth's Critical Zone, that part of the Earth's surface where the continuous interactions between rock, soil, water, air, and living organisms determine the availability of resources to living beings and thus regulate the natural habitat itself.
Another important activity is data management and representation, in order to make geological and cartographic information available at different levels of dissemination and through interactive technologies such as WebGIS and WebMap Service platforms.
