Eurovolc Project: Strengthening the European Volcanological Community

The European Commission project is coordinated by the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
EUROVOLC – European Network of Observatories and Research Infrastructures for Volcanology is a three-year (2019–2021) European Commission H2020 research and innovation project coordinated by the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
The project's objective is to build an integrated and harmonized European volcanology community capable of supporting, exploiting, and improving existing and emerging national and pan-European research infrastructures. Harmonization includes connecting scientists and decision-makers and connecting still isolated infrastructures operated by volcano observatories and research institutions.
To this end, EUROVOLC will conduct networking and joint research activities and provide transnational and virtual access to key European volcano observatories and volcanology research infrastructures. These activities will address four major cross-cutting themes: "Community Building, Volcano-Atmosphere Interaction, Subsurface Evolution, and Volcanic Crisis Preparedness and Risk Management," of particular interest to the entire Earth science community.
In the EUROVOLC project, the Italian Department of Civil Protection is an associate partner of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The Department's team contributes to the project through participation in three work packages (WPs) related to "Community Building" and "Volcanic Crisis Preparedness and Risk Management." Specifically, the Department is involved in:
WP3 (Training and Dissemination);
WP7 (Collaboration between volcano monitoring institutions and European civil protection authorities for volcanic risk management);
WP12 (Use of tools for risk assessment and management).
The EUROVOLC consortium includes volcano observatories responsible for surveillance and monitoring in Italy, Iceland, Portugal (Azores), Greece (volcanic islands), and France (overseas territories), as well as other partners such as civil protection authorities responsible for volcanic risk management. The consortium of volcano observatories includes all those present in Europe.
