ASTERIS – Adaptation to Saltwater inTrusion in sEa level Rise Scenarios.

The Adriatic coastal regions, sensitive to the effects of climate change and experiencing a significant increase in water consumption during periods of low rainfall, require better protection of freshwater aquifers from saltwater intrusion through sustainable water resource management. ASTERIS (Adaptation to Saltwater inTrusion in sEa level RIse Scenarios), an Interreg Italy-Croatia project, aims to develop a strategy for water resource protection and management.
Common challenges:
1) expected impacts of climate change on sea level rise and precipitation rates;
2) water supply essential for the sustainability of coastal societies and ecosystems;
3) increased human activities, including agriculture, which increase the risk of seawater intrusion into freshwater aquifers.
