New study about the Neogene magmatism in the Cappadocia Volcanic Province (Central Turkey)


Samuele Agostini and Paolo Di Giuseppe (IGG-CNR, Pisa), along with Mehmet Yılmaz Savaşçın (Munzur University, Tunceli), Piero Manetti, and Sandro Conticelli (Università degli Studi, Firenze) have recently published a paper in the journal Lithos about the evolution of volcanism in Cappadocia (Turkey).

The study is based on the petrology, geochemistry, isotope geochemistry and geochronology of recent volcanic products (4 million years to 15 thousand years) erupted mainly as lava flows and monogenetic cones from five clusters of Cappadocia Region in Central Turkey, namely Karapınar, Acıgöl-Nevşehır, Kızılırmak, Hasan Dağ and Erciyes Dağ. Two group of volcanic rocks have been distinguished, one typical of arc magmas formed in mantle sources modified by subduction, one typical of intraplate magmas formed in mantle sources not affected by subduction. Differently from what is normally found,  these two groups are closely space and time associated. Investigations showed that these magmas were erupted in a post-collisional transtensional tectonic environment: magma with arc affinity derive from a source previously modified by subduction, which is no longer active in the area. On the contrary intraplate magmas formed after mantle upwelling and decompression: however, they only reached the surface after some interactions with overlaying arc-type magmas.
