Workshop: Brussels, ESPAY Catalunya - Rue de Loi 227

The H2020 Ecopotential project is landing at the European Parliament in Brussels! From 8 to 12 January 2018, the Place du Luxembourg building will host the exhibition SPACED: Using Earth Observations to Protect Natural Landscapes. Through the 26 exposed panels it will be possible to know more about the protected areas studied in the project, among the most beautiful in Europe and in the world, and the research activities carried out by the project partners. Beautiful photos and satellite images, accompanied by short texts, illustrate how researchers and managers of protected areas are working together to study mountain, arid, coastal and marine ecosystems.

Each protected area has characteristic ecological challenges and needs to deepen the knowledge of ecosystems, to make predictions on the future human and climatic impacts and to improve management practices. The investigation methodologies developed in the framework of the project activities are declined locally to respond to specific needs for in-depth study and scientific research of each protected area. This is how the ECOPOTENTIAL project works: for each protected area, "storylines" have been defined, which explain the ecological problem and how it will be dealt with by the researchers.

The panels of the exhibition illustrate in simple language the scientific work, and in particular the use that is made of satellite data, but also the beauty of the places, making immediately grasp the importance of scientific research aimed at improving the conservation of our natural environments.

In the coming months, the exhibition will remain in Brussels hosted by other institutions but the researchers are evaluating other opportunities to open the exhibition to the public in Italy.

Furthermore, on Wednesday January 10, in Brussels, a workshop entitled 'Spaced: Using Earth Observations to Protect Natural Landscapes' will take place at Espai Catalunya, the representative seat of the Catalan regional government.
