The Association for Geophysics “Licio Cernobori” (AGLC) awarded Alessandro Santilano, research fellow at the CNR-IGG of Pisa, for the study on the geothermal system of Larderello (Tuscany) by means of electromagnetic geophysical methods.

Every year, during the conference of the National Group of Solid Earth Geophysics (GNGTS) the Association for Geophysics “Licio Cernobori” awards the best works presented by young researchers in the three topics: Applied Geophysics, Geodynamics and Seismic characterization of the territory. This year, in Trieste, the prize for the Applied Geophysics was awarded to Alessandro Santilano for the work: “The deep structures of the Larderello geothermal field (Italy): results from a new electromagnetic study” by A. Santilano, A. Godio, E. Rizzo, and A. Manzella. The study was carried out in the frame of the European IMAGE Project (FP7) in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino and the CNR-IMAA. The decision of the board was explained as follows: “The research exploits MT and TEM methods, integrating the results with the geological-geothermal model of Larderello (Tuscany) after a careful activity of acquisition, analysis and interpretation of data. The development of an innovative analysis of EM data by probabilistic algorithm (PSO), also with a joint approach, contributed to a better imaging of the deep structures of the area. The conceptual model of the Larderello geothermal system is therefore improved”.
