Geological Map of Piedmont at a scale of 1:250,000 and the “GeoPiemonte Map” WebGIS Service.

The “Geological Map of Piedmont” and its related geodatabase (The GeoPiemonte Map Project) have been published on the Arpa Piemonte Geoportal. This constitutes the first synthetic geological representation of the Piedmont Region, based on a database that is continuously updated and homogeneous on a regional scale.

Data management and updating and service maintenance are handled by CNR IGG (responsible for the database and scientific-technical coordination) and ARPA Piemonte (responsible for the WebGIS service).

The GeoPiemonte map, produced at a graphic scale of 1:250,000 (publication in a scientific journal, Piana et al., 2017: Journal of Maps full article, download ) can be consulted at a greater level of detail via the webGIS service on the ARPA Piemonte Geoportal, up to a scale of approximately 1:70,000.

In future developments, thematic data sets such as subsurface hydrostratigraphic units, seismic hazard maps, satellite lineament maps, detailed geological structures, etc., will be added to the basic geological data sets, with the aim of gradually achieving a 1:50,000 scale representation.

The GeoPiemonte Map Project

Il The GeoPiemonte Map Project began in 2007 with the collaboration between the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources of the CNR – Turin unit (CNR IGG Torino) and the Department of Geology and Instability of Arpa, and with the participation of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Turin, the Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering of the Polytechnic of Turin and ENI Spa.

The GeoPiemonte Map project aimed to:
– create a 1:250,000 scale cartographic product scientifically validated by qualified academic experts in various fields of geology and by the editorial board of an international scientific journal in the sector;
– develop a conceptual model that allows for a scientifically rigorous description, yet structured into levels of progressive detail, for consultation by users with different levels of expertise, for the purposes of dissemination, technical or specialist consultation;
– structure a geodatabase capable of representing the geological units and structures of Piedmont in an interoperable manner (Linked Open Data), compliant with international descriptive standards for Geosciences (IUGS GeoSciML) and the guidelines indicated by the INSPIRE, Data Specification on Geology);
– develop a consistent logical and semantic organization of the database. This activity led to the definition of “OntoGeonous”, an ontology that has incorporated existing vocabularies in the field of geosciences and which is currently available on dedicated wiki pages “WikiGeo” managed by the Department of Computer Science of the University of Turin, Prof. V. Lombardo.

The digital geological map of Piedmont is a fundamental tool for understanding the Piedmont region, providing preliminary information for geohazard analysis, soil and subsoil planning and management, and the design of infrastructure projects.

2021 Update:

Second corrected and updated version of the “Geological Map of Piedmontand the related WebGIS service, also including synthetic data of the subsoil of the Po Valley, reworked from interpretations by ENI spa.
